What Perplexity says when someone searches for an accountant

We ran 28 searches for an accountant across UK towns and logged every source Perplexity cited: businessfinancing.co.uk led, in 15 of the 28 answers.

We asked Perplexity "best accountant in [town], UK" once for each of 28 UK towns, on 28 September 2026. A further 8 of these 28 towns were also asked a second time the same day; since that repeat asked exactly the same questions, we count only the first run of each question here, not the repeat.

Perplexity named at least one firm in every one of the 28 answers, an average of 5.4 named firms per answer.

This page is one of seven written from the same batch of September 2026 questions, covering accountants; architects; solicitors doing conveyancing; physiotherapists; dentists; solicitors in general and family law; and vets. Each page reports only the answers for its own trade, counted separately from the others.

Which sites get cited

businessfinancing.co.uk, a site that compares business-finance and services providers, was cited in 15 of the 28 answers, more than any other source. ukaccountingfirms.co.uk followed in 12 of 28, and accountantsbook.co.uk, handpickedaccountants.co.uk and vouchedfor.co.uk were each cited in 11 of 28.

These are directories and comparison sites, not the accountants' own websites.

Five things to check first

  1. Search your own trade and town the way a client would, and read the list of sources under the answer, not only the names in bold.
  2. Check your listing on businessfinancing.co.uk, ukaccountingfirms.co.uk, accountantsbook.co.uk, handpickedaccountants.co.uk and vouchedfor.co.uk: the same business name and address as your website, with a phone number that still rings through.
  3. Keep review profiles on these sites current, especially if you have moved office or changed your trading name.
  4. Write plainly, on your own site, what you do (bookkeeping, payroll, tax returns, VAT) and who you serve (sole traders, limited companies, landlords).
  5. Run the search again after a few weeks. One run is a snapshot, not a ranking, and the named firms can vary between runs.

None of the five sites above is the accountant's own website. Checking only your own site and how it ranks in a general web search is a different check to the one we did here: we logged the list of sources Perplexity showed under its answer to an actual question about your trade and town.

What this means in practice

businessfinancing.co.uk led this sample at 15 of 28, and the next four sites followed at 11 of 28 or 12 of 28. No single site was in every answer. A practice listed and current on several of these five sites, rather than only one, matches more of the pattern we measured than a practice that is strong on just its own website.
